A case study conducted by the Journal of the Medical Association of men entering the emergency department showed that licorice tea (a popular herbal tea) is not without health risks.
Dr. Jean-Pierre Farrett, Department of Neurology, Magill University, Montreal, Quebec, said: “Certain herbal products may cause excessive harmful side effects. Products containing licorice root extract can increase blood pressure and retain water. Reduce potassium content "
This 84-year-old man went to the emergency room for an emergency treatment for hypertension and found that it was due to drinking tea made with licorice. His blood pressure rose sharply, and he suffered from headache, photosensitivity, chest pain, fatigue and swelling of the calf. After admission, patients with a history of hypertension told their doctor two weeks ago that they must take one or two cups of homemade licorice root extract called "Elxus" every day.
Licorice tea is very popular in the Middle East and parts of Europe, and Exus tea is especially popular during Ramadan in Egypt.
Dr. Farrett said: “In view of Canada’s multicultural population, doctors should consider screening for licorice root intake for patients who have difficulty controlling hypertension.”
