The effect of smoking on psoriasis patients

According to a study published online on October 14 in the International Journal of Clinical Practice, smoking has negative effects on psoriasis, including increased nail involvement and cardiovascular disease incidence, as well as a higher psoriasis area and severity index.

Dr. Yildiz Hayran and Basak Yalcin from Ankara City Hospital in Turkey examined the smoking habits of 133 patients with psoriasis and assessed the impact of smoking on disease characteristics.

Researchers found that 67.6% of psoriasis patients are smokers. Compared with non-smokers, smokers have a higher incidence of moderate to severe psoriasis, nail involvement, systemic therapy, and other cardiovascular diseases. There is a positive correlation between the amount of smoking and the area of psoriasis and the severity index.

The author wrote: "Smoking has many negative effects on patients with psoriasis, such as increased disease severity, nail involvement and increased incidence of cardiovascular disease." Changing smoking habits and supporting smoking cessation may help manage the negative effects of psoriasis. "
