【Animal Modeling】-The common carotid artery puncture method to prepare the middle cerebral artery embolism model in rats

OBJECTIVE: To compare the timeliness, success rate, and mortality of the rat middle cerebral artery embolization model prepared by the common carotid artery puncture method and the traditional suture method.

Method: 32 male rats were randomly divided into the common carotid artery puncture group and the traditional suture method group. The suture was inserted from the common carotid artery to embolize the middle cerebral artery. The Bederson neurological function scoring standard was used to score the neurological function at 24 h after surgery, and the 24 h success rate and mortality rate were counted.

Results: The time, success rate, and mortality of the MCAO model made by the common carotid artery puncture method and the traditional surgical method were (82.3±17.4) s and (164.6±22.0) s, respectively, and the difference was significant (P< 0.01); 87.5% and 68.75%, no significant difference (p>0.05); 6.25% and 18.75%, no significant difference (P>0.05).

Conclusion: The preparation of the rat middle cerebral artery embolization model by the common carotid artery puncture method is simple, time-saving, less traumatic, and highly maneuverable.
