Researchers at Oregon State University have found that copper-containing compounds can effectively extend the life cycle of mice with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS or Rogerig disease). Currently, there is no effective cure for this disease. The results of Oregon State University may open up new treatments for this disease. The scientist in charge of the research, Joseph Beckman, said that copper-containing compounds help stabilize superoxide dismutase (SOD) and promote proper folding. SOD folding error is one of the main causes of ALS. The data showed that the survival time of ALS mice treated with this method was extended by 26%. The results of this study were published in the "Journal of Neuroscience". Scientists hope that through further research on this principle, effective treatments for ALS can be developed as soon as possible.
