Objective To analyze the histomorphological characteristics of porcine coronary artery balloon injury lesions through a systematic review, and compare the histomorphological characteristics with human atherosclerotic plaques, so as to provide a basis for the rational application of porcine AS model.
Methods The databases of CNKI, Wanfang, VIP, PubMed and Web of Science were searched to screen the related researches on the minipig model of coronary artery injury caused by balloon injury. the similarities and differences.
Results A total of 38 papers were included. Morphological analysis showed that the lesions constructed by balloon injury often formed severe intimal hyperplasia in a short period of time, leading to lumen stenosis. The main components of the hyperplastic intima were smooth muscle cells and proteoglycans. The fibrous cap and lipid core are rare; this lesion feature is significantly different from the pathological features of atherosclerotic "fibrous cap covered with lipid core".
Conclusion There are morphological differences between intimal hyperplasia caused by balloon injury and AS, and it should be used with caution in lipid mechanism research and preclinical evaluation as an AS model.
