[Animal modeling] - Effect of Epimedium tribulus complex on sexual function and sperm vitality in rats

Objective To study the effects of Epimedium Tribulus complex on sexual function and sperm motility in rats.

Methods 50 male SD rats were randomly divided into 5 groups. Except the normal control group, the right testes of the rest rats were removed, and each group was given test substance or purified water by gavage for 40 days. On the 30th day after intragastric administration, the rats were mated with estrous female rats. On the 35th day after intragastric administration, the penis erection latency was detected. On the 40th day after the animals were euthanized by gavage, the testes, prepuce glands, seminal vesicles and prostate glands were weighed and the organ coefficients were calculated, the testosterone content in serum was detected, the number of sperm and the sperm activity rate were counted, and the sperm activity was observed.

Results The capture rate, ejaculation rate and ejaculation frequency of semi castrated male rats during mating were increased by low and high doses of Epimedium Tribulus complex (P<0.05). Compared with the semi castrated model control group, the testosterone content in serum of the animals in the low dose group of Epimedium tribulus complex increased (P<0.05), and the seminal vesicle and prostate gland coefficients increased (P<0.05); The sperm activity rate of animals in the high-dose group increased (P<0.01), the number of sperm moving forward in a fast straight line increased (P<0.05), and the number of dead sperm decreased (P<0.01).

Conclusion Epimedium terrestris complex can promote the secretion of testosterone, has a certain androgen like effect, can improve the sexual dysfunction caused by decreased testosterone secretion, and increase sperm viability and vitality.
